When a thief stole his iPod a few years ago, Tom Miller decided to install surveillance cameras on his house and garage in South Minneapolis. Sunday night they captured video of a prowler in his backyard on Abbott Avenue South.

“All of a sudden I see this man walking up my driveway and trying to get in my garage and see him jump a fence and start to approach my sliding door, where my children were playing,” Miller said.

That was about the time his next door neighbor, Karen Arris, came home and saw the guy who was dressed in a blue jogging outfit.

“Thank God the neighbor lady pulled up through the alley. Who knows what would have happened?” said the father of three.

The prowler left footprints in the snow before he took off and Miller called 911. Miller also posted information on the Fulton neighborhood’s Facebook page to alert them a possible burglar was in their area.

He also scanned the video on his recorder and found grainy images he gave to police who told them of a similar incident that happened a few blocks away that same evening.

Miller bought his four-camera system for about $500. He said the money was well spent for the extra protection it provides his family and property.

“I can’t really prevent theft but I can definitely deter it and, if something happens, see who did it,” said Miller who plans to upgrade his system and add four more cameras.
